Presented on December 7, 2024, at the 2024 ASHA Convention in Seattle, WA.
Session Description
Speech intelligibility has long served as an index of speech severity in research and clinical practice of dysarthria. In consideration of the increasing effort to explore alternative measures of speech intelligibility, this study examined the relationships among four perceptual measures (speech intelligibility, naturalness, ease of understanding, and listening effort). Our special interest was the potential effects of dysarthria severity and subtype on the relationships among the four perceptual measures. In the presentation, we will highlight the varying degrees of sensitivity to dysarthria of the selected measures across the wide spectrum of speech severity and different types of dysarthria, as well as their clinical usefulness.
